Snowshoe trips and cross-country skiing

Snowshoes are the perfect way of exploring the mighty Ylläs fells – in complete silence

Snow packed down by the wind is easy to walk on but forging a way through the deep fell gullies can be quite hard work. Our snowshoe trips follow snowshoe trails, but we also get to enjoy deep snow. The scenery and the wonders of the surrounding nature are well worth the effort, whether the trek is made in dazzling sunshine or in snowfall, by day or by night. The guide’s familiarity with the terrain, its flora and fauna, is the difference between an ordinary safari and a Snow Fun Safari.

Silence of the forest **

The ancient Finns once roamed the forests on wooden skis fashioned from birch and the Lapps travelled across the snow in reindeer pulled sleighs. Nowadays we head to the fells on snowshoes, following the gullies carved by the glaciers of the last Ice Age. We trek for about one and a half kilometres through the rugged scenery of the Ylläs-Pallas National Park. This leisurely pace enables us to observe the world around us. With some luck we may catch a glimpse of the ancient spirits of Lapland. Around halfway we stop for a break in a hut and enjoy a warm drink by fire.

National Park & Kellostapuli ***

Snowshoe walking is a great way of exploring the winter landscape and it’s also excellent exercise. Our trek takes us about eight kilometres through the fells starting from the Nature Centre of Ylläs-Pallas National Park and heading towards the top of Kellostapuli fell. At the top we will hear more about the surrounding area and other fells of the Ylläs region. On the way our guide will point out things of interest such as animal tracks and snow formations and is ready to answer any questions that may arise. Snack included.

Duration: 4 hours
Departure: on Tuesday at 12.00

85 € / adult
59,50 € / child (4–12 y.)

Cross country skiing

Do you want to experience the versatile cross-country skiing opportunities of the Ylläs region or go skiing to enjoy a hot drink in an atmospheric wilderness café? Our guide will provide cross country training suitable for both beginners and for those with some previous skiing experience. Learning generally takes place on easy terrain, but if the participants so wish, we can also ski a more challenging route.

Cross country ski school for families*

We will start our tour by choosing the ski equipment. The instructor will first demonstrate the basic techniques of cross-country skiing which we will then practice on a flat surface. When all is going well, we will make a short trip on the maintained skiing tracks.
